PREMALIGN CONDITIONS OF THE ORAL CAVITY

The common type of this kind of lesions are called as Leukoplakia. Leukoplakia is regarded as a premalignant disease, but some care is required in defining exactly what it mean  by term, by definition, ‘Leukoplakia’ means ‘a white patch’, but all chronic white lesions in the mouth are by no means premalignant. Some other white lesions not normally included under the term ‘Leukoplakia’ such as liken planus can also undergo malignant change.

Etiology: This lesions has been attributed many factors, including, tobacco, alcohol, mechanical irritation, syphilis, vitamin deficiency, hormone alterations, galvanism and malnutrition. Undouptly, many factors, both of local and/or systemic influence, acting alone or in combination, may result in the white patch clinically designated as leukoplakia. The same factors are frequently implicated in the etiology of oral cancer.
